7 Ways to Stay Focused on God in a Busy Season: Keeping Christ First When Life Feels Full

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Matthew 6:33

Life comes in seasons.

There are seasons where life feels slow, and we have plenty of margin in our schedules. Then there are seasons that seem to move at lightning speed. Work becomes busier. The kids go back to school. Sports begin. Church activities fill the calendar. Family responsibilities increase. Before we know it, every hour of the day seems spoken for.

I've been there.

The danger isn't that we're busy. The danger is that we become so busy that we slowly stop spending time with God.

It doesn't happen all at once. It happens little by little. We miss a day in the Word. Then another. Prayer becomes shorter. Worship becomes less frequent. Before long, we're trying to navigate life without spending time with the One who gives us the wisdom, strength, and peace we need every day.

The beautiful thing is that it doesn't have to be that way.

Here are a few simple reminders that have helped me stay focused on God during life's busiest seasons.

1. Be Intentional About Putting God First

Our relationship with God will never happen by accident.

We have to choose Him every day.

God desires to be first in our lives. He isn't looking for whatever time we happen to have left over. He wants our first and our best.

No matter how full your schedule becomes, intentionally make time for Him.

Ironically, the seasons when we feel like we don't have time for God are often the seasons when we need Him the most.

2. Guard Your Heart

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Proverbs 4:23

Busy seasons often bring distractions.

Stress.

Fear.

Anxiety.

Comparison.

Discouragement.

If we're not careful, those things can slowly pull our hearts away from God.

Pay attention to what you're allowing into your eyes, ears, and mind. Protect your heart by staying close to His Word and choosing to think on things that honor Him.

3. Surround Yourself with the Things of God

One of the easiest ways to stay spiritually strong is to keep God's truth around you throughout your day.

Listen to your audio Bible while driving.

Play worship music while cleaning the house.

Listen to a biblical podcast while exercising.

Turn on a sermon while folding laundry.

Even when life is busy, there are opportunities throughout the day to fill your mind with things that encourage your faith.

4. Wake Up a Little Earlier

Even thirty minutes can change your entire day.

Find a quiet place.

Open your Bible.

Pray.

Listen.

Allow God to speak to your heart before the demands of the day begin.

Those quiet moments with the Lord often become the foundation for everything else that follows.

5. Stay in God's Word Every Day

God's Word feeds our souls.

Just as our bodies need food every day, our spirits need God's Word every day.

Some days you may read several chapters.

Other days you may only have time for a few verses.

Don't focus on the amount.

Focus on the consistency.

Little by little, God's Word transforms us from the inside out.

6. Stay Connected to Other Believers

God never intended for us to walk with Him alone.

Stay connected to your local church.

Attend Bible study.

Join a small group.

Pray with other believers.

Sometimes the encouragement we need comes through the people God has placed around us.

7. Invite God Into Everything You Do

Following Jesus isn't something we do only during our quiet time.

It's how we live.

Talk with God throughout your day.

Pray while you're driving.

Thank Him while you're cooking dinner.

Ask for wisdom before making decisions.

Invite Him into your work, your parenting, your marriage, and every conversation.

Walking with God isn't about adding one more thing to your schedule.

It's about learning to walk with Him through everything already on your schedule.

Don't Let Busyness Steal What Matters Most

There will always be another email to answer.

Another load of laundry.

Another meeting.

Another errand.

But there is only one relationship that gives life to everything else.

Jesus.

As this season becomes busier, don't simply make room for God.

Make Him first.

When we seek Him first, everything else begins to find its proper place.
