Covering Our Children: Praying God's Promises Over Our Children This School Year

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."Psalm 91:1

As another school year begins, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children isn't found in a backpack or a lunchbox.

It's our prayers.

As mothers, God has given us the incredible privilege of covering our children before Him every single day. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have a blood-bought right to come boldly before the throne of God and pray over your family in the name of Jesus.

Never underestimate the power of a praying mother.

Every morning before our children walk out the door, we have the opportunity to place them in God's hands. We can pray over them before they leave for school, while they're in the classroom, on the bus, on the playground, and every moment in between.

One of my favorite chapters to pray is Psalm 91.

It is filled with God's promises of protection, safety, refuge, and peace. I encourage you to read it every day. Read it out loud, and as you do, speak each of your children's names and your spouse's name as you pray through God's promises. Make those promises personal. They belong to you as a child of God.

Sometimes people ask, "What if I don't feel like I have enough faith?"

The beautiful thing is that faith grows.

The Bible tells us,

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."Romans 10:17

As you continue reading God's Word out loud, you'll hear yourself declaring His promises, and your faith will continue to grow. The more you hear yourself speaking God's Word, the more you'll begin believing what you're saying. God designed us that way. Faith isn't built by our feelings; it's built by hearing His Word. As you continue speaking His promises over your children day after day, you'll find yourself becoming more confident, more at peace, and more certain that God is watching over your family just as He promised.

God's Word also tells us,

"Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word."Psalm 103:20

What an incredible promise.

God has given His angels assignments. The Bible says they "do His Word" and "heed the voice of His Word." When we speak God's Word, we're not simply repeating Bible verses. We're giving voice to the promises God has already spoken.

As you declare God's promises over your children and your family, the angels of God are working behind the scenes according to His Word. What an encouragement to know that heaven responds to the promises of God being spoken in faith.

God also reminds us,

"God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?"Numbers 23:19

Unlike people, God cannot lie.

If He has spoken something in His Word, you can stand on it with complete confidence. He is faithful to do exactly what He has promised. Our responsibility isn't to make His promises happen. Our responsibility is to believe Him, stand on His Word, and continue confessing what He has already said. God watches over His Word to perform it, and He is always faithful to every promise He has made.

As this school year begins, pray over every area of your child's life.

Pray for wisdom.

Pray for courage.

Pray for godly friendships.

Pray that they will be a light for Christ wherever they go.

Pray for their teachers, principals, school staff, bus drivers, and classmates.

Pray for peace throughout every school.

Pray for protection from accidents, violence, bullying, sickness, temptation, and every plan of the enemy.

Pray that every child returns home safely each afternoon.

And pray that this will be a year of tremendous growth, learning, favor, and God's blessings upon every student and educator.

Never forget that prayer isn't your last resort.

It is one of your greatest privileges as a follower of Christ and one of the greatest gifts you can give your children.

As you faithfully cover your family in prayer each day, trust that God hears you, loves your children even more than you do, and remains faithful to every promise He has made.

May this school year be marked by God's peace, His protection, His wisdom, and His presence over your home.
